I used to get bored with the news and never follow politics. Unless there was a local news story about a new restaurant or event in town, the news didn’t interest me much. But lately there have been things happening that have made me unable to burrow into my little private corner not paying much attention to the world around me. Because the world around me has been changing in an alarming way.
In recent years, I have been shocked by things I have seen that seem lacking in one simple thing – humanity. When did it become OK to overturn someone’s car and beat up on them because they had a sticker displaying their support of someone running for office? When did the world take a step backwards on accepting one another’s diversity and welcoming different cultures?
We are treating politics like the most extreme sporting events where one side is against the other side no matter what one or the other side does, except we have forgotten the part at the end of the game where people shake hands, come together, and go have a drink together after a winner is crowned and the loser graciously accepts defeat.
Who am I? I don’t really fit the mold of either the left or the right. I am happily married but I don’t have children. I work a regular office job and don’t have enough time for my personal passions. I stress about making ends meet. I am not a single cat lady, but I am a married dog lady (and power to all the single cat ladies out there :-P). I am not religious, but I am spiritual. I welcome and respect other religions so long as they follow the simple tenets of humanity. I believe all opinions should be valued. I believe in freedom of speech. I believe we all have a right to create a home for ourselves that is OURS, and our homes can take on so many different shapes and that’s what is wonderful and unique about us. I believe we should be allowed two fundamental rights to get by in this world – the right to have (and ideally own) our own little slice of paradise, and the right to feel safe where we live. Simple things.
I have conservative friends, and I have liberal friends. I think my liberal friends think I’m more liberal and my conservative friends think I’m more conservative. I used to think I was socially liberal and economically conservative and maybe being that way puts me right in the middle. I think there are always unique situations that could put my opinion on either side of a debate – I am not pro this or against that because I believe there are shades of gray in every situation, and everything must be evaluated according to the facts and truth of that particular situation.
And I believe we should be good to one another. There was a time when that common value was common sense. If I can bring out the good in people, then I consider that a win. If I can tap into our collective humanity, then that to me is like pure gold. If I can simply provide you with real, unbiased, non-politically tainted facts that give the whole picture and let you form an educated opinion from the real facts, then I will also call that a win.
That is why everything that is written on this site is written with the point of view of what is on the side of humanity. Because in this day and age, we could all use a little bit of humanity towards one another, right?
